Underrated Chinese Drama- Winter Begonia

 Winter Begonia (2020)

Now, I've seen many underrated dramas, some of them are gaining recognition and some aren't. This baby here is a mainland-china drama. Though it's a bit lengthy, most of the dramas from there are, you can't blame them. But the length of a drama mustn't hold viewers from watching them. I know masterpieces when I see them, and this one here is one heck of a series. Aired in March 2020, this wonderful drama is adapted from a BL novel! But of course, since it's from mainland China it is stripped off of its main BL elements and has quite some alterations. But who can blame the homophobic government? Oh wait- we can. But let us not get into criticizing here. We are here to appreciate this series.

A story that revolves around a Peking opera performer and a wealthy businessman who are brought together by their love for Peking opera.

Set in the 1930s, it follows Shang Xirui, a Peking opera performer who relies on his exceptional talent to gain fame in Beiping. Being an outsider, he faces opposition from the locals but doesn't relent nor give up on fulfilling his dreams to promote Peking opera. As he pours himself into mastering the art, wealthy businessman Cheng Fengtai becomes deeply captivated after watching a performance for the first time. He makes acquaintance with Shang Xirui and becomes an avid supporter. Through Cheng Fengtai's help, Shang Xirui builds Shui Yun Lou and trains a new troupe. When the Japanese army invades Beiping in 1937 and patriotic men and women take up arms to fight, Shang Xirui and Zhu Fengtai are moved to make sacrifices for their country.

Just have a look at the cinematography... The directors and writers are surely giving a headache to the SAPPRFT, with the chemistry oozing out between these two, I find it hard to believe they're just acquaintances. Although one already has a wife and a baby, and the other is lovelorn, you will forget all about it when you'll see them share the screen together (which is most of the time). It's like no one else matters more than these two.

I started watching this on May 10th and I'm only done with six episodes but I knew this is something I had to blog about. This is one of the best-underrated dramas I've ever seen and deserves more spotlight.

With this many bubbly moments, it is still not viewed by many yet. While watching anything on Dramacool, you have a comment section at the end of the page where you comment, react and if you want, use the recommendation button, to recommend this to other people. The majority of the people use all of these options but as I progressed in episodes, I could see fewer and fewer of these activities by the people. Now it either means that the people simply dropped it in between or were too engrossed to see what happens next that they ignored this fuss and continued binging. I really wished it was the second case so I went to MyDramaList and checked how many people had reviewed it. There was a total of 23 reviews, 685 ratings, and a total of 3,729 viewers. You can't tell how relieved I was. But it is still less compared to other dramas like The Untamed [which was also adapter from a BL book], like- way... less.

Before going into the drama I recommend watching the trailer on YouTube. Just click the link and the video will open in a new tab but if you don't want to fuss over it, I would gladly leave the video down below. But if in any case, this doesn't work, just click the word 'youtube' above and you'll find the drama's trailer.

I hope you enjoy watching this show, and if you like my blog then do follow That Fujoshi Girl and comment down below.

Until next time, bbye!
